Queen’s get their League Two campaign underway at Forthbank on Saturday against Kevin Rutkiewicz’s Stirling Albion in a match that both sides will go into with their eyes set on an opening day three points.

The Binos, like Queen’s, exited the Betfred Cup at the group stages having picked up one point from four very difficult ties, three of whom came from leagues higher than the Binos will feature in this coming season.

If last season is anything to go on, there’s likely to be very little between the sides on Saturday. The sides met one five occasions during the 2018/19 campaign drawing three and winning one apiece with both wins being by a single goal.

Ahead of Saturday’s opener the club media team caught up with the gaffer to get his thoughts and hopes for the season ahead. Roberts said: “It’s important we aim as high as possible and look to achieve as high a finish in the table as we are capable of.

“We have a squad of players that I believe are hungry to do very well and they are up for it. We know what we need to do in order to achieve and that is to be consistent over 36 games.

“I’m very pleased with how we have recruited over the summer, but that work is not done. The injuries we’ve picked up over the last couple of weeks have highlighted areas that we need to strengthen, and work continues behind the scenes to recruit the right personnel. It’s also important to me that we have competition for places throughout the entire squad, as that will the players on the toe’s week on week.

“We go into to tomorrow’s game expecting and knowing it’ll be a difficult one for us. Like ourselves and the majority of other teams in the league this season, Stirling Albion will also have high hopes of having a good season.

“We know that in order to have a consistent season we need to ensure we’re solid at the back and not wasteful in front of goal, we know how much it costs us last season losing silly goals and not taking our chances at the other end.

“We will have a few late calls to make on the availability of certain players tomorrow, but I’m delighted to welcome the skipper Scott Gibson back in to the matchday squad. Scott’s not trained much recently as he’s battled back from injury but it’s important to have guys like him in and around the squad and he may well feature for us at some point during the match.”
