Hot on the heels of a winning start to our League Two campaign at Stirling on Saturday the Spiders return to cup duty at the Penny Cars Stadium in Airdrie for Tuesday night’s Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Cup First Round fixtures against Celtic Under 21’s.
It’s a cup competition which Spiders fans will remember fondly, one which brought us one of our best moments of the 2018-19 season courtesy of that memorable night in Oswestry when we progressed past Welsh champions TNS with of a penalty shoot out victory. Tuesday night’s game in Airdrie however is likely to have a much lower key feel about it.
Ahead of the game Mark Roberts spoke to the club media team to give his thoughts.
Roberts said: “Without being disrespectful to the competition, supporters should expect to see a much changed starting XI to that from Forthbank on Saturday. This will be an opportunity others to come in, show what they are capable of and stake their claim for a regular slot in the starting XI.
“Despite it being very early on in the campaign, we’ve had a few injuries and for that reason I will be taking the opportunity to rotate the squad and give others their chance.
“It goes without saying that we want to progress, as we do any time we play in a cup competition, but I will not be risking a lot of my first team squad in a fixture like this. It will come as a surprise to no one that out priority is the league this season, cup runs are a very welcome bonus, but the league is our bread and butter.
“It’s difficult to know what exactly to expect when you’re going into a game against a youth side, we know they’ve had us watched but we’ll approach it as we do with every other game. We’ll need to compete from the start and give a good account of ourselves. If we play to our strengths and take our chances we’ve every chance of progressing to the second round.
