Community Football

Queen's Park has been involved in the development of football in the community for many years.

More than ten years ago, under the management of then Youth Development Officer Frank Reilly, Queen's embarked on a once a month coaching camp for boys and girls aged 5 to 16. These camps saw over one hundred participants coming to Lesser and being coached by qualified Queen's Park coaches.

In addition each year Queen's invited all the primary schools in the south side to send a team of boys and girls to take part in our Festival of Football. This festival took place on lesser, on a Saturday morning prior to a first team home game. The schools took part in a series of seven a side games with fun, participation and fair play being emphasised. All participants, their parents friends and coaches, them moved over the Hampden for lunch before watching our first team play in a Scottish Football League match. For one lucky youngster from each school there was the opportunity to take part in a half time penalty shoot out on the famous Hampden turf.

Two years ago Queen's were invited to support The City of Glasgow's Breakfast Club Coaching Programme. Coaches for Queen's Park went to most of the local primary schools and organised a series of football clinics for youngsters to take part in prior to the start of the school day.

The success of that initiative saw Queen's Park being invited to organise a football programme to develop competitive eleven a side football in the first year of secondary schooling. Invitations were sent to all Glasgow's secondary school to send a squad of first year pupils to Lesser for coaching, with the emphasis on not only personal skill but tactical development. The youngsters would spend time on Lesser being coached before moving to Hampden and seeing round the stadium culminating in visiting the Scottish Football Museum.

At the same time Queen's have been developing their own development programmes. Fully qualified coaches are used to design and deliver a course that is balanced between individual skills development and healthy lifestyles and fun.

The programmes are targeted at boys and girls aged 4 to 16 who want to develop their football skills in an enjoyable and fun environment. The courses are organised round the main school holidays of summer, spring and autumn breaks and normally take place at Lesser Hampden.
