27/4/13 – Montrose vs Queen’s Park
This weekend saw the final action of this season’s Fantasy Football competition, with teams battling
it out for the top four in the overall standings, the final monthly prize, and in some cases the settling
of some personal scores. They had to battle too against an injury list which included regulars
Neil Parry, Ricky Little and James Brough, while Davie Anderson (whose goal last week had been
instrumental in several teams’ success) was given a well-earned rest.
Brown Owl’s Pack when into this game with a 22-point lead at the top of the overall standings,
while Jack’s Boys and Gulliver’s Travellers looked odds-on for a prize in second and third. Georgia’s
Hampden Heroes however were on dicey ground, with only a one-point advantage in fourth and
with a few teams bidding to overhaul them.
It was fitting perhaps that four of this week’s best five scores came from teams who finished in the
top ten. Hardly Athletic top scored for the third time this season with 44 points – it was never likely
to see them take a prize, but saw them climb five places back into the top ten at ninth. Also scoring
well were Soosi Spiders – at one point the pace-setters, they had dropped to tenth last week, but 39
points saw them climb back up the table. It wasn’t enough to claim a prize however, and they could
only finish sixth, 16 points off the prizes.
Georgia’s Hampden Heroes managed to catch up five points on Gulliver’s Travellers, but it was not
enough to see them over the line as Aesop’s Fabulous XI overtook both with a score of 37 to claim
third place; Georgia’s Hampden Heroes slip out the prize places to fifth. Jack’s Boys finished with a
12-point lead in second place, and so will get first pick of our three runner-up prizes. However, the
biggest congratulations must go to Brown Owl’s Pack, who also scored 37 points to finish 23 points
clear at the top – they are the Queen’s Park Fantasy Football Champions 2012-13, earning the prize
of the group meal at the Waverley Tea Room.
Meanwhile, it was also crunch time in the monthly standings, with Cameron’s Spiders and Gulliver’s
Travellers starting the day level on points at the top, with a four-point advantage over third, and ten
points over fourth. In the end however they had a disappointing day, slipping backwards to fourth
and fifth respectively and blowing a chance of the final monthly prize. The final result in the April
table was very close, with the former leaders holding on for a one-point advantage over sixth-placed
MC Spiders (down from fourth) and just a single point behind Georgia’s Hampden Heroes who
remain third.
Two teams however finished level on points at the top, one further point ahead. Having been second
in October, fourth in November, fifth in December, and sixth going into this game, Brown Owl’s
Pack may be a little disappointed to finish second again this month, with Aesop’s Fabulous XI picking
up the final Waverley Tea Room Manager of the Month award by three goals on the tie-breaker –
congratulations to them.
Sadly for AC a little Silhouette of Milan, there were no fireworks at the bottom of the table. They lost
another ten points ground this weekend to finish a massive 84 points adrift of Promotion Beckoning,
thereby picking up the 2012-13 Wooden Spoon.
That concludes the Fantasy Football competition for this season. Next week in the Social Club,
following our match against Peterhead, we will have the presentation of the prizes (along with the
small matter of the annual Player of the Year awards), to which everyone is invited. Many thanks to
everyone who took part in the competition this year.
The points awarded to the players for this match were as follows:
Lochhead 2, Spittal 3, Robertson 1 (Bradley 3), Gibson 7, Gallacher 3, McParland 6, Connolly 2
(Shankland 1), Capuano -1, Quinn 11, Longworth 3, Burns 1 (Davison 1).
