Alan started his senior career with Clydebank in 2000 before moving to Airdrie United in 2002.

Next up for Alan was a move to Falkirk in 2005 where he made 70 appearances.  He moved to Rangers  in 2007.  During his time at Ibrox Alan had loan spells at  Blackpool and Norwich City.

In 2009 he moved to Plymouth Argyll.  He was loaned to Hibs during his season with the Pilgrims.    Alan next signed with Motherwell in 2010 then moved to Notts County in 2011 before signing for Indian side East Bengal for a season.

In 2012 Alan signed with Exeter City, scoring 14 gaols in 58 appearances.  He was loaned to Bristol Rovers before signing with St Mirren in 2015.  He made 16 appearances for the Buddies before being released at the end of season 2015-16.

After two years out of football Alan signed with Queen’s Park in December 2018.

Alan made his debut for Queen’s Park against Elgin City at Hampden Park in the Ladbrokes League Two game on Saturday 21 December 2018.
