St Mirren Colts Preview

The Spiders make the short journey along the M8 to Paisley on Saturday to take on St Mirren Colts with a place in the quarter finals of the Irn-Bru Cup up for grabs and on the eve of the tie, there was a boost for the club with the announcement that Mark Roberts would be the permanent successor to Gus MacPherson, having previously been in interim charge for the last three weeks.

Ahead of the game at St Mirren Park the club media team caught up with the new gaffer to get his thoughts going into the match.

Roberts said: “It’s a game we’re very much looking forward to. The opportunity to reach the quarter final stage of a cup competition doesn’t come around too often and it’s one we’re looking to grasp. When you get to this stage in a tournament things become that bit more serious.

“We’ll obviously be up against a young side but they are players who are at a Premiership team on merit, and progression in the competition will be no easy task. From our perspective though, we know if we play close to the best of our abilities we will give ourselves a really good chance of getting through.

“Last week’s victory was an important one for us and sets us up nicely for two cup games in a row. I thought the players were outstanding in that match and we’ll be looking for that same work level and commitment against St Mirren.

“Ultimately we might be up against a Colt team but it’s a game of football like any other and we have to focus on winning the battles in key areas on the park.

On the injury front Roberts was happy to confirm that there have been no fresh injuries picked up since the victory over Clyde a week ago and added that although Josh Peters missed training on Thursday night, the striker is likely to fit and available for selection on Saturday. The news for defenders Scott Gibson and Cammy Foy, both of whom have picked up injuries in recent weeks, was not so positive though, with Roberts confirming both will be side-lined for lengthy spells, the exact amount of time for each player remains unknown at this time.
